Royal Botanical Garden, Peradeniya

Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya is about 5.5 km to the west from the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It attracts 2 million visitors annually. It is near the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka. It is renowned for its collection of orchids. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Attached to it is the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka. The total area of the botanical garden is 0.59 square km at 460 meters above sea level and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture.

Hakgala Botanical Garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden is situated on the Nuwara Eliya - Badulla main road 16 km from Nuwara Eliya. The garden has a cool temperate climate because its altitude is 5,400 feet above the sea level. The mean annual temperature ranges between 16 °C to 30 °C during the course of a year. From December to February it has a cold climate, while the warm climate persists from April to August. There are over 10,000 species of flora planted here and during the Spring season in Nuwara Eliya thousands of visitors come to see the blooms here. The Number of annual visitors is around 500,000. The garden is famous for a number of species of Orchids and Roses planted here.

Henarathgoda Botanical Garden

Henarathgoda Botanical Garden is situated on the Gampaha - Minuwangoda main road 450 m away from the Gampaha Railway Station. Its distance is about 29 km from the Sri Lanka's commercial capital of Colombo. The altitude of the garden is about 33 feet above the sea level and it has a tropical low-country climate. The total area of the botanical garden is about 36 acres and, recently it acquired another 7 acres for its expansion process. In here one could see the first rubber tree planted in Sri Lanka as well as some of the valuable trees from the 19th century.

Mirijjawila Botanical Garden

Mirijjawila Botanical Garden is located on the Colombo - Kataragama main road. It has the Mattala International Airport on its left side and the Hambantota Harbor on its right side. This land was covered with thorny shrubs and abandoned chena lands when it was allocated for this purpose in the year 2006. Three water tanks named Kohombagas wewa, Maliththangas wewa and Demataththa wewa have been constructed in the garden premises to preserve the moisture of the land. The total area of the botanical garden is about 300 acres.


Seethawaka Botanical Garden, Avissawella

Seetawaka Botanical Garden is situated on the Puwakpitiya – Thummodara main road at Illukowita adjacent to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve at Avissawella. The 79 acre garden has a cool temperate climate. A beautiful stream flows through the garden to sustain the various wet zone plants. The tree cover is made up of large Terminalia Arjuna trees. The garden mainly serves as a research area for different universities around the country. It is also used as a conservation area for threatened and vulnerable endemic plant species in the Sinharaja Rain Forest region.
